Health Insurance Coverage

UE CITIZENS

EU citizens staying in Italy for work purposes have the medical expenses coverage guaranteed by the registration to the Italian Health System.
Before moving to Italy for a study or internship experience, EU/Non-foreigner citizens are asked to refer to the competent Health Institution in their home Country in order to ask for an extension to Italy of their health assistance through one of the following issues:

  • E 106 or E 109 Form (in case the applicant was in charge of her/his parents) for study or work stays more than 365 days. These forms guarantee you the right, under the same conditions as the nationals of the hosting country, to the complete care services provided by enrolling to the Italian Health System;
  • the European Health Insurance Card (the so-called TEAM Card) for temporary stays (less than 365 days), will grant all EU and EU-equated citizens access to immediate medical care, when necessary, under the same conditions as the nationals of the host country.

EXTRA-UE CITIZENS

Third Countries citizens staying in Italy for work purposes (such as subordinate work, self-employment, or enrolled to the unemployment listing) have the medical expenses coverage guaranteed by the registration to the National Health System-SSN.
The registration at the National Sanitary System will be processed by submitting the application form to the Local Branch of National Healthcare Service A.S.L. (Azienda Sanitaria Locale, for details please visit: Provincial Health Board) in which the foreign worker is officially resident or currently living, jointly with the tax code of the applicant, the stay permit and a copy of the identity card or passport.

Third Countries citizens staying in Italy for study/training purposes do not have to register to the National Health System, they can do it voluntarily. In case they do not want to register to the SSN, they have to take out a private policy covering sickness, accident and prenatal care (as well as in case of pregnancy). The insurance coverage must be valid throughout Italy (and the whole Schengen area) and for the entire duration of the stay in Europe. The policy have also to be extended to their dependent family members as well.
